I write for stage and screen -- stories about ambitious dreamers wrestling with their place in history; stories about people caught in an economy that makes them feel worthless; stories about the invisible hands that shape our lives.

I grew up in Houston, Texas. My dad is a Louisiana-bred Navy Fighter pilot who taught me how to hunt, build furniture with my hands and ride a horse. My mom, a first generation Russian Jew from Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, taught me how to travel, pray, and haggle for better prices at the grocery store.

Meeting, and working with, people from other cultures has had a profound effect on my life and writing.  I've worked as a waiter at a mafia-run restaurant in Naples, Italy, an aid-worker in rural Rwanda, a professional actor in New York City and a professor in Southern California. My writing often has characters venturing into the unknown, embarking on a crazy adventure, and meeting people from wildly different backgrounds.

My outlook has also been deeply shaped by my experience as an insulin-dependent diabetic. Since age four, I've waded through pinpricks, emergency rooms, cutting-edge medical devices and an ever-expanding odyssey through the American Medical system. I often write characters with chronic conditions, negotiating worlds that weren’t built for them. â€‹

Netflix, Fox, Amazon, Chapman, UCSD & beyond

My writing, teaching and script development work have brought me some incredible places.

My plays have been developed at Berkeley Rep's Ground Floor, South Coast Rep, Center Theatre Group/Mark Taper Forum, The Old Vic, The Royal Court, About Face Theatre, and more. My plays have been produced in NYC by Rising Phoenix Rep, in London at Riverside Studios and in Denver by Local Theatre Company. I've had short work produced and developed in Los Angeles by Chalk Rep and Skylight Theatre Company.

I've sold original one-hour dramatic pilots to both Skydance Television and Warner Horizon Studios -- and worked on shows including The Resident (on Fox), Devil in Ohio (Netflix), Cruel Summer (Freeform/Hulu), Cross (Amazon) and The Greatest (Amazon). I've sold two original screenplays to Tashtego Film in NYC.

As a Producer & Literary Director, I've worked at The Public Theater in NYC (under both Oskar Eustis & George C. Wolfe), a Literary Associate at a boutique film production company, National Coordinator for Suzan-Lori Parks' 365 Days/Plays Project and in the President's Office at The Broadway League.

I've been an Adjunct Professor at University of California, San Diego & Chapman Universities -- where I've taught Advanced, Intermediate and Beginning Playwriting; Advanced, Intermediate and Beginning Screenwriting; as well as courses on how to shape and sell original TV pilots. I've also taught a large-scale freshman-oriented writing class called "Intro to Story," and "one-off" courses at Berkeley Rep School of Theatre and San Diego State University.

I'm a proud graduate of Brown University and the University of California, San Diego.

"Engrossing, intricate, highly amusing and doggedly researched. A tremendous new play."

Reviews

"I would literally take any class he offered. He could teach a class about how to do laundry and I would take it, learn a ton and have the time of my life."

Chapman University Student

"I think he's handsome"
